The presence of heat causes the metal to change in volume due to the changing energy state of the atoms in the metal. In turn, that property change affects the length of the bars when heated, in which the change is dependent on the original size of the material, temperature change and composition. To test this relationship, the length of the bar and the room temperature were recorded for each of the four metal rods in their respective trials. The rods were placed in an apparatus connected to a steam generator, and the temperature from the extensometer was recorded over 10 minutes using a thermometer. After the rods were exposed to heat for some time, a significant change in length and temperature was observed and measured for 10 minutes under 10 seconds and then 1-minute intervals after the fifth minute. The recorded relationship results were used in a mathematical equation to find and analyze the coefficient of linear expansions of the different materials.
