The trend of deploying artificial intelligence (AI) technology to forecast and prevent crime in the United States of America and, more recently, New Zealand, the Australia Federal Police have planned to adopt AI technologies in Australia in June 2024. To forecast and prevent crime, the technologies employ face recognition, phone hacking, and criminal profiling. Facial recognition entails gathering video footage of human faces captured in public areas and on social media and linking it to vehicle licence plates. Phone hacking allows the authorities to get access to mobile phones and mobile phone conversations. Criminal profiling is the process of establishing links between social elements such as persons, places, and criminal charges in order to anticipate and prevent crime by better allocating police resources to high-crime areas. Despite their deployment, Australia currently lacks a legal framework for their usage. Following political pressure, the Australian government established a parliamentary investigation into preventive policing and is now collecting public views on the usage and regulation of these technologies.
