This assignment will help you understand concepts, constructs, questions and types of sources used in business research methods. This is phase one of a three phase, term-long research project Many students are intimidated by the idea of research. But it can be a fun and exciting first step in business! By the end of this course, you will be very familiar with the concept of "research- based decision making". The following scenarios will influence the rest of the term. You are encouraged to choose an option that you find interesting, note that you may not get your first choice. There will be a maximum number of students that can sign up for each one. Your instructor will provide a Microsoft Word document to sign up. Option 3 You are a fitness buff and are thinking of opening an outdoor fitness boot camp for post-secondary students in Winnipeg. Everyone wants to lose those Covid pounds, but you cannot afford to pay rent for a gym, and besides, it seems like people are playing outside more than they did before. Answer the following questions: Part 1: 1. Introduction (situate the reader (your instructor) what should they expect to learn about in this assignment). Introduce the purpose of your research. 2. What is the management dilemma (problem or opportunity) based on the above scenario of your choice. What is the purpose of your research (why are you doing it)? 3. Using the above scenario of your choice, briefly describe the following: a. What is the concept or concepts? What are the constructs that can help a reader better understand the concept or concepts? b. Use a conceptual scheme (think diagram) to help explain how the constructs relate to the concept or concepts. Help the reader visualize it using a diagram, table or other figures. 4. What do you want to find out by doing secondary research? a. Formulate a research question(s) that fits the management dilemma. (Ex: Management Dilemma- The sales in my bakery are slumping, how can I increase them? Research Question-Should we diversify into Dog Biscuits?) b. Name THREE Investigative Questions - these will help you focus your attention and pin- point resources. (Ex: What is the likelihood that this new dog initiative will tarnish/improve our brand? Who is most likely to want to purchase Dog Biscuits from a bakery?). Make sure that these relate directly to helping answer the Research Question, this is where new researchers often make an error, Part 2A: Exploration Strategy. Before launching into any more research, you want to look at what information is out there to back up your idea. Part 2A: Exploration Strategy. Before launching into any more research, you want to look at what information is out there to back up your idea. 2A. 1 Find five reputable sources. Think about data bases, industry newsletters and magazines, Statistics Canada, peer-reviewed journals. You can also find additional secondary sources that are more mainstream, think business magazines, Ted Talks, newspaper articles. See LEARN for library videos that will help you to access this information. 2A 2 You must include the following elements in the written portion (see Part 2B) Include a total of five "real" examples of information that help to answer your three research questions. You do not require all five for each of the questions. Find at lease ONE that refutes (goes against) what the others are saying a. Cite at least one sentence from five of the sources. Include proper APA citation. Note sources cannot be dated prior to 2016 (unless it is a seminal document- ask your instructor if you are unsure). b. How confident are you in your findings? Explain why or why not. I 28. 2 Insights: Is the idea worth pursuing? Has your perspective changed? 28. 3 Have you found a BETTER idea, a NEW management dilemma Or is it apparent that the question has been answered and the process is finished (no further research is needed)? Explain. What information is missing that would help to solve the Management Dilemma or that might help you to triangulate the results (future research). Which THREE questions would you ask? 2B. 4 Include a brief conclusion (remember that the conclusion refers to what was discussed in the introduction). Include the key point or points that you want the reader to retain
