From reference of the text, religion played a role to really help people understand that the poor need help, they need the community to come together to help give to the poor and what they needed. And I think that this still stands to this day, that a church will help in times of need, and help with a lot of other things that we all might not actually realize. Churches bring people together, even if you might not practice a religion, usually when a church is a sponsor of something, it brings attention that it is a need from the community to help a family or some other form. The Enlightenment moved heads because of the voice of comprehension, meaning things could only get better with change happening but that involved rational change, and not irrational change through character and practice. It was brought headway that welfare could get better for people if they understood the human life and the reasonings that some people are poor and how they could better themselves with change and guidance with it. But during the time of Awakening the churches actually caused people to not come together and created the factor that fewer attended.

Overall, religion in this time period in context, many people can argue that The Great Awakening didn't bring people together, because of how few people actually didn't and or stopped attending the churches. There was a new profound way of helping people, it wasn't just through religion anymore, but through the use of reason and the Act of the Enlightenment.
