When thinking about productive communication, we have to consider what helps our receiver understand our message. Using phrases such as "what I'm hearing you say is..." or "I understood you to say ___, am I on the right track?" can go a long way in ensuring the message is delivered correctly. These statements also demonstrate active listening and can help the sender feel good that they are being heard.
