Why would a network administrator configure port security on a switch?

• A network administrator would configure port security on the switch in order to prevent unauthorized hosts from accessing the LAN. This is the main reason why port security is being used in the switch.
• The feature is used to restrict input to an interface with the help of limiting and also identifying MAC addresses of the stations which are allowed to access the ports.
• When you will assign the secure MAC addresses with a secure port where the port will not be forwarding the packets with the source addresses outside the group of defined addresses.
• If the station is with a secure MAC address configured or being learned on one secure port attempts that access to another secure port, the violations can be flagged.
• If you limit the number of secure MAC addresses to the one and assign the single MAC address then the workstation attached to that port is assured with the help of the full bandwidth of the ports.
