When managing school finances, applicable regulations relating to financial management and accounting principles, such as Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP), should be used to ensure successful financial management.

The National Norms and Standards for School Funding (NNSSF) in South Africa offer a legal foundation for quintile-based school funding. It is believed that the five-quintile grouping of schools will eliminate historical inequalities in education. Quintiles 1 to 3 are free that are primarily located in townships and rural areas. Fee-paying schools located in urban and more affluent areas are Quintiles 4 and 5.
