Question:
Your worker, Samantha, is a community case manager. She has a new client, Carly, who has recently joined her caseload. Carly is 52 years old and recently divorced. Carly is currently seeing a psychologist for cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) to help her overcome obsessive compulsive thoughts. Carly has been attending therapy sessions for around four months and has significantly reduced the number and severity of obsessive compulsive thoughts however she has now been assessed as suffering from depression. Samantha visited her today and found her lying on her back veranda in a very groggy state with an empty bottle of anti-depressants in her hand. It appears she has attempted suicide. Samantha phoned 000 and Carly was taken to hospital after it appeared she had attempted suicide. Samantha phones you and sounds quite upset. She has never had a client attempt suicide and she says she cannot get it out of her mind.
Using the case scenario, answer the following:
- When would you schedule a debriefing session with this worker and what environment would you need to provide to conduct the session?
- How would you plan, prepare and conduct debriefing in line with organisation standards and procedures?
- Discuss the communication, facilitation and questioning skills and techniques you would use to encourage open discussion.
