Consider an ideal gas contained in a piston–cylinder arrangement as a closed thermodynamic system. The gas is compressed from an initial volume at state 1 to a smaller volume V₂. The compression process can be carried out as either a constant-pressure process or an isothermal process. It is desired to minimize the work required to achieve the desired compression. Determine which process will minimize the work input and justify your choice. The initial states and the final volumes are the same for both processes.
