Based on all of the research and reading that I have done, I believe that immigrants are still coming to the US for refuge from war as well as the opportunities that are available in the US.
The state that I selected is San Diego, CA. The majority of the immigrants that live in San Diego are from Mexico, Philippines, Vietnam and China. The Mexican immigrants are moving to the US to escape from poverty, a corrupt government, or fear of the drug cartels. “Beginning around the 1890’s, new industries in the United States Southwest-especially mining and agriculture-attracted Mexican migrant laborers The Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) then increased the flow: war refugees and political exiles fled to the United States to escape the violence” (Steinhaure, LOC.com). Women from the Philippines would marry American men and the men would relocate them to the US, the families would follow. This was the case in the 1970’s. American men could offer them a life in the US with more hope and a chance to live a better life.
Chinese immigrants were looking to escape a communist country while Vietnamese were looking to escape war. After the Vietnam war, many Vietnamese refugees were relocated to the United States where most of them settled in California. This is also the case for Chinese, most found their new home to be California. “In 1945, nearly three out of every four Chinese Americans lived in California, Hawaii, or New York, most in San Francisco, New York City and Honolulu”.
As I stated above, the reading and research that I have done, shows that immigrants are coming to the US for reasons of fleeing from war, a corrupt government and the hope of economic security. As we are seeing today with Mexican immigration, they come to America with hopes of working and getting an education. In most cases these things are not offered or attainable in their country.
