Julia, the cognitive scientist we discussed in class, has a friend called Gabriel. Gabriel was raised speaking English and Portuguese at home, and has been taking Japanese classes since middle school. He is fully proficient in all $3$ languages. While hanging out with Gabriel and some of his friends, Julia noticed that he seems to adapt his code$-$switching to the person he is talking to$.$ For example: if he is talking to someone who only speaks English and Japanese, Gabriel does not code$-$switch to Portuguese, even if that is one of his first languages.
