This issue becomes more complicated during the Covid-19 pandemic. Although many technological solutions are available, many business leaders have felt uncomfortable with having their employees work from home. Most managers try to deal with the uncertainty of remote work by controlling and monitoring the employees' work even more than before, but this maybe cause negative impacts. By being controlling, managers send the signal that they do not trust their employees working remotely. Even more, from a productivity perspective, people being strictly and closely controlled doesn't mean that they will perform well. Netflix cofounder and co-CEO Reed Hastings said "I don't see any positives. Not being able to get together in person, particularly internationally, is a pure negative," when asked about the benefits of working from home. In contrast, working closely together, employees could be more easily monitored and judged on their performance. However, many other businesses realize the benefits of working from home. Technology firm Fujitsu implemented the "Work Life Shift" plan offering unprecedented flexibility to its 80,000 workers in Japan. The company would allow staff to choose where they worked, whether at office" or "from home", a major corporate hub or a satellite office, and flexibly use their time according to the contents of their work, business roles, and lifestyle.
