Question: Consider the building floor plan shown below. Beam dimensions are: width, b w of 1 2 i n and overall depth, h , of 2

Consider the building floor plan shown below.
Beam dimensions are: width, bw of 12in and overall depth, h, of 24 in. The 24 in. depth includes
the 6in. slab, so the beams hang 18in. below the slab. Story heights are 12ft, center-to-center.
The concrete is normalweight concrete.
The space is an upper floor retail space. Assume a superimposed dead load (SDL) of 20 psf. Live
load reductions should be used, as permitted. Shear and moment demands should be determined
per ACI 318-19 Section 6.5(see handout if you do not have your code yet).NOTE 1: For problems 1 and 2, it is appropriate to use the average "l" for adjacent spans when
calculating moment demands at supports where the beam is continuous. For example, to calculate
the negative moment in the E-W beam at Al,ln is 30ft minus the column dimensions. To
calculate the negative moment in the E-W at Bl,ln is 27.5ft minus the column dimensions.
NOTE 2: For problem 1, assume the slab edge is parallel to the outside edge of the columns.
For the beam spanning between columns A1 and D1, use the ACI shear and moment
coefficients to:
a. Determine the beam shear demand (VL) at critical sections (there are six critical
sections for shear),
b. Determine the beam moment demand (Mu) at critical sections (there are nine critical
sections for moment), and
c. Draw an approximate distribution of shear and moment for these spans.
For beam m-n-o-p, use the ACI shear and moment coefficients to:
a. Determine the beam shear demand (VS) at critical sections (there are six critical
sections for shear),
b. Determine the beam moment demand (Mu) at critical sections (there are nine critical
sections for moment), and
c. Draw an approximate distribution of shear and moment for these spans.
Extra Credit (+5 pts):
Model the beam spanning along column line B using SAP2000 or RISA or Revit. Although
you will model all four spans, it is symmetric. Please report for the beam spanning between
columns B1 and B3:
a. The beam shear demand (V) at critical sections (there are four critical sections for
shear),
b. The beam moment demand (Mu) at critical sections (there are six critical sections
for moment), and
c. Submit a plot of the shear and moment distributions for these two spans.MYTo calculate negative moments, ln shall be the average of the adjacent clear span
lengths.
