Classmate 1 Question: Every workplace should have a violence prevention program in place to prevent and address violent situations that might occur at a workplace. Components included in a violence prevention program are managerial commitment and support, a workplace safety analysis, prevention and control, administrative controls, safe work practices, training, and post-incidence response. The goal of including all these components in a violence prevention program is to develop a thorough workplace violence prevention policy to prevent violent incidents from happening and establish a system where employees can document violent situations that might occur while working. For example, workplace violence has been an issue for a long time in the retail businesses (Johnson & Ortmeier, 2017). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has therefore established some recommendations in order to help managers of late-night retail businesses implement violence prevention programs to match the hazards within their business. Late-night retail businesses such as liquor stores and gas stations are establishments that often experience violent indecent, for example, incidents including homicide and assault. The recommendations created by the OSHA were created to give employers the opportunity to recognize the hazards within their business to allow them to create measures to keep their employees safe. Not all incidents can be prevented, however, by establishing measures, the damage can be reduced. For example, the sixth component focuses on training. If all staff members are trained thoroughly, they are aware of the potential hazards and they would be able to protect themselves and others more effectively by using the policies and procedures established by the violence prevention program. All employees that are new, temporary, visiting, or reassigned, including managers and supervisors should receive the same training to ensure that the workplace is a safe space for everyone (Occupational Safety and Health Administration U.S. Department of Labor, 2009).
Classmate 2 Question: Furthermore, there is a great importance of having the support of management when developing or enacting a violence prevention program in the workplace. That is because they are the ones that create a sense of order in the workplace, management is the one training employees to do the job and also understand their duty. Without the proper training, employees would not react as effectively when they need to put in the skills learned through the violence prevention program. No business would like to have weak employees, so that means it is up to management to make sure that everyone follows through on their part and to make sure they are doing it correctly for when it is time to apply what they have learned.
