Classmate 1 Question I do believe that incarceration is an appropriate penalty for corporate crime because usually white-collar offenders who receive just a large fine and probation make these offenders feel like they were able to get away with it. It does not discourage them and in fact, makes them feel even more confident to continue doing it if they believe this is as far as punishment would go. There are two reasons for incarceration, which are punishment and rehabilitation. Punishment is much easier as an approach for corporate crime and the justice system should not allow offenders who commit corporate crimes to feel like they can manipulate the system and find a way of escaping severe consequences. It is equally as important for other types of white-collar crimes because there needs to be an example set to once again not allow people to think committing these crimes is justifiable and not a big deal. The benefits of incarcerating white-collar offenders would be deterrence and lessening corruption in the legal system. However, a drawback to incarcerating white-collar offenders would be the increase of non-violent offenders in the prison system, which does not sound as reasonable as the benefits make it seem.
