For my business, I would like to be a business owner high in customer capital, meaning a people person. I would like to create opportunities for myself in serving the community with superior quality work. The business I would choose for myself is a tool sharpening mobile business. Tools such as knives, drill bits, sawblades both for Residential and Industrial businesses.
If you knew you wanted to franchise your business down the road, how would that impact your business planning?
To franchise my business, I would have to really concentrate on training in techniques used to sharpen the tooling. This would be difficult to franchise just because there literally is no room for error when performing such services. Either too little or too much can destroy the customers property, thus losing a customer and negative exposure. Through the many people I have attempted to train over the years, not many demonstrate the core competencies required to do the job properly. So really without that vital trait franchising is not part of my vision.
How will our discussion on successful small businesses we know affect your business plan?
It would not, those small businesses that we know and have seen grow all have one thing in common, taking care of the customer. Having a vision along with passion to succeed will help you along the way. All those businesses had to start somewhere and with the right people in the right places, you can make it a reality.

The form of business I'm interested in is creative; that makes me the artist, the sole proprietor. I plan to create digitally enhanced topographical maps of places specifically significant to individual customers. Part of the mission of my venture is that I want to practice and utilize the skills I learn as I progress through my Geospatial Science degree path. My target market is people that enjoy the outdoors or have a place that they have a connection to. The product is a uniquely created piece of artwork that represents that place; therefore, a variable pricing structure would be created. Marketing communication would be online, supplies and shipping done by myself from home or possibly out of my own studio. I would not fathom a franchise at this time, though if the business venture were to be extraordinarily successful, then there may be an opportunity for a partnership. If there were the necessity and the revenue for growth, an apprenticeship of sorts or reproduceable stylization of the artistic product so that the trademark principles would not be lost. My plan is simple and very small, so many ideas I glean through our discussions will benefit because the is little room for error in such a small venture, considering loss of vision or capitol.
