The Better Foods Corporation produces a cereal called Brekkie Break Crunch that tastes great and is not unhealthy for children or adults. It has some modest nutritious benefits, such as 50% of an adults daily requirement of vitamin C, and 5% of an adults daily requirement of iron. It is also low in fat, and fortified with calcium. When Brekkie Break Crunch first came on the market, the advertisers stressed the taste and the crunch (it doesnt get soggy in milk). They did not stress any health or nutrition benefits. This was because there were tight government restrictions and regulations preventing companies from making such claims. Even so, the company was able to take and hold a significant share of the market for several years.
However, the government has since relaxed its restrictions on making health claims. The Better Foods Corporations competitors have been quick to re-style their own breakfast cereal ads in order to make health claims. They claim that their cereal will facilitate weight-loss, combat depression, speed up muscle development, improve ones athleticism and even help prevent cancer. However, the vast majority of these health claims are misleading as a customer would have to consume outlandish amounts of the cereal in order to receive any of the benefits. But, consumers were not made aware of this fact in the ads (nor anywhere else). As a result of this change in its competitors ads, the Better Foods Corporation has experienced its first drop in market share in several years.
You are an employee at Better Foods Corporation. You have been asked to come up with a new ad campaign that will stress the nutritious aspects of Brekkie Break Cereal. This assignment puts you in something of a bind as you find some of the outrageous health claims being made by your competitors offensive from a moral standpoint. You think its possible that many of the adults viewing the ads know that these claims are outlandish, but its also possible that some do not. And you also worry because your cereal has historically been marketed not just to adults, but also to children, who you fear are much less able to separate outlandish claims from reasonable ones. Yet, if you dont create similar ads, sales of your companys product may continue to decline, and you might lose your job.
