Question:
- Name of Business Seyi Wike and Co is the largest, to date, certified organic and certified kosher Sea Buckthorn Berry farm. The farm is also a licensed cottage winery on-site as well as a processing facility where we make juice, dehydrated berry powder, skin care products, and other value-added products. The fruit itself is defined as Hippophae rhamnoides, (also known as sea buckthorn, seabuckthorn, sandthorn, and seaberry) is a deciduous shrub containing over 190 bioactive substances. It is recognized as one of nature’s most powerfully nutritious and healing potential plants offering one of the widest ranges of nutrients from a single source found on the globe, including Antioxidants, Vitamins, Minerals, Polyphenols, Omega Fatty Acids, Carotenoids, and Phytosterols. Sea Buckthorn fruit, seeds, and leaves all have components that assist with cell regeneration, anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. Fruit yield will show in years 4 to 5 with a maximum showing around year 8. Every part of the plant can be used including the juice, fruit pulp (powder) seeds, leaves, bark, and oils from the seeds and pulp. Products/Services: We sell frozen fruit, frozen juice, and dehydrated powder and produce a skin line that includes high-quality face cream, face serum, lip therapy, soaps, and CBD bath bombs.
- The winery produces 4 varieties of Sea Buckthorn wine and we ship wine in bulk to a licensed distiller who produces a Sea Buckthorn brandy infused with maple and coffee. Technologies/Special Know-how: Over the years and through much research, trial and error, and through a few Sea Buckthorn (SBT) farm tours to other provinces, we have developed unique processes to harvest, and clean plus we offer bulk serum which is something other Algerian producers do not offer in the high SBT concentration levels that use certified organic fruit and food grade carrier oils. Market: We have procured markets ourselves by research and direct sales as well as creating awareness by spending many hours at markets describing what Sea Buckthorn is and providing samples. Distribution Channels: Direct from Farm-gate, through local retail stores, and through online sales. Issues to be addressed:
- This is the main area that students will be addressing. What are three challenges you are looking to have students address?
- 1) Web update that includes our biggest challenge (shipping costs). How to get the right program that will work with Wix to calculate the cost of shipping by weight of products selected.
- 2) Marketing. We are not the “fresh” face of the company and do not know how to tap into media streams. Technology is not our strong suit.
- 3) Sales – how do we reach out to the right buyers? We are a smaller farm and do not have a HASSAP certification. Would like to partner with a larger facility that has the processes in place that could take on our farm and sell our fruit under their program.
