MY POST:

Since launching in 2004, Facebook has encountered several privacy issues related to the entrapping and management of user data. A recent privacy controversy surrounding Facebook is the British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica which obtained personal data belonging to about 87 million Facebook users for political advertising in the year 2010. Examples of the data collected were private data on the users residences and what pages they frequently visited, which were used to create psychological profiles that explored attributes and personality differentia (O'Guinn et.al 2019). These details were later distributed in political crusades. This information was disclosed in 2018 by a former Cambridge Analytica employee, Christopher Wylie after holding interviews with the Guardian and the New York Times newspapers. To respond to this, Facebooks CEO testified in front of Congress, made a public apology, and agreed to pay a fine of 500,000 pounds to the UK Information Commissioners Office for risking its users data through exposal.

Facebook might have captured the data purposely for analysis to create personality profiles that assist advertisers and to target specific audiences whose content makes them spend more time on the app. Third-party marketers such as other advertising agencies were involved in compromising user privacy since they have been coming up with various ways of psychological baiting for years and Facebook had, in 2012, trademarked technology that closely resembled this (O'Guinn et.al,2019). Facebook had previously stated that the users whose data had been obtained by Cambridge Analytica was 30million but in real sense it was 87 million. According to (O'Guinn et.al,2019), communication is essential as it verses people on different things about an organization or entity. Due to such a scandal, the relationship between Facebook and its users might be affected by privacy concerns through fear over the risk of data breaches by individuals such as hackers and assertion of the rights to privacy and some pressure groups.

CLASSMATE POST:

At the acquisition of WhasApp and Instagram, Facebook ran across some privacy concerns of its own and came under fire from the Federal Trade Commission. Specifically, the Federal trade commission is concerned with Facebook's track record of data privacy concerns and monopolization of the social media market. It all stemmed back to 2016 when Facebook came under fire for using the 3rd party Cambridge Analytica to acquire customer data. Cambridge acquired data from 10s of millions of Americans concerning a physiological profile, "eager to sell the data to American campaigns and politicians" (Confessore 2018). Capturing this data was a money grab, the power that this data held was invaluable to political campaigns. These privacy issues obviously should raise concern to the customers. However, it seems that it will not have such a large impact because of the power of Facebook as the largest social media platform. It is difficult to get Facebook users to abandon a service that is so addicting and powerful. Facebook inevitably lost some users, but they can use reactive public relations strategies to resolve problems and defend themselves (O' Guinn, 2019, p. 377).
