1. Operations Management Overview Operations Management can be understood as an area of management which is concerned with the management of system, processes and functions that manufacture goods and renders services to the end user, to provide desired utilities to them while adhering to other objectives of the concern, i.e. efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity. Operations Management is important to all types of business, with the goal to maximize efficiency while producing goods and services that effectively fulfil customer needs. Operations is one of the three strategic functions of any organization and include decisions that are strategic in nature. Hence, it is a very important wing of the organization that takes care of converting inputs into outputs with the expected standards of quality. 2. Project Specification You are tasked to conduct research to analyse one or more of the strategic operations management decisions and their impact on organisational performance in one of the following sectors: - Engineering sector (workshops, construction sites, Chemical laboratories...) - Educational sector (Primary, Secondary \& tertiary education; Public libraries...) - Medical sector (Hospitals, Clinics, Laboratories, Pharmacies...) - Manufacturing sector - Retail sector - Service industry (Banks, Airlines,) a) Assess a situation and identify a problem for a company of choice, analyse this problem and come up with a problem statement which concisely and clearly states the problem(s). b) Analyse the importance of operations management in the organisation's production system/ service sector. c) Examine the reasons for the related problems faced by the organisation; d) Conduct extensive research (Literature review) to determine the solutions available to solve this problem and determine what tools/techniques one can use to solve the problem in the said organization. 3. Project Layout The following criteria should be adhered to: Section 1: Introduction Problem statement Research objectives Section 2: Organization brief Section 3: Operations Management Decisions Section 4: Data analysis and interpretation Section 5: Conclusions and Recommendations Section 6: Reference: Reference all work properly in your text. Use the Harvard method. The report should include pages of a standard cover page, declaration, and abstract, table of content, references / bibliography, and appendices
