Cardiovascular disease is a general term that describes a disease of the heart or blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease has been identified as a significant risk factor for severe illness and death from COVID-19. COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system. Patients with cardiovascular disease are more likely to experience severe symptoms of COVID-19, including respiratory distress and acute respiratory distress syndrome. According to Heart Disease Facts every 1 in 5 deaths is from heart disease in 2020. In the U.S. every 40 seconds someone has a heart attack. I did not know that before but that is very scary to know. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. When I was younger my stepmom passed away due to a heart attack, so it is nice to learn more about it and how common it is in the U.S. The article I found was COVID-19 and Cardiovascular Disease by Mina K. The article goes into details on how COVID-19 has potential consequences on the cardiovascular health of millions of people who survive infection worldwide. Among hospitalized patients with COVID-19, evidence of acute cardiac compromise is common and includes acute heart failure. Preexisting cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular risk factors, and other comorbidities predispose patients with COVID-19 to more severe disease and mortality (Chung, Zidar, Bristow, Cameron, Chan, Harding III, Kwon, Singh, Tilton, Tsai, Tucker, Barnard and Loscalzo). According to the article given to us Women who have heart attacks receive less extensive care than men, research suggests women receive less care than men and women are more likely to die in the hospital. They also receive less medical procedure than men. Gender plays such a big role in heart disease. Women dont handle talking clot-busting drugs or undergoing heart related procedure like men can. Only now is research starting to determine the biological, medical, and social bases of these differences between males and females. In our textbook in chapter nine, there are some risk factors that are mentioned such as advancing age, family history, gender, and ethnic background. Another category in cardiovascular disease includes psychological conditions such as hypertension, cholesterol level, problems in glucose metabolism, and inflammation. The textbook also mentions a third risk in cardiovascular disease such as behavioral factors that include smoking, weight and diet, and physical activity. There are also several psychological factors that the textbooks mention such as education level and income, social support and marriage, stress, anxiety, and depression, hostility and anger, anger and cardiovascular reactivity, and suppressed anger. Chapter nine in our textbooks also talks about preventing the first heart attack before diagnosis. Some things to do is to reducing hypertension, lowing cholesterol, and modifying psychological risk factors (Brannon, Updegraff, Feist, 2022).
