The video A Crack in Creation: Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control Evolution explores the potential benefits and risks of gene editing and the ethical considerations surrounding this powerful technology called CRISPR. CRISPR allows scientists to make precise changes to DNA sequences. DNA as we know from week one is the carrier of genetic information. DNA is a self-replicating material that is present in almost all living organisms. The video highlights the possibilities of gene editing to cure genetic diseases, and even to remove some diseases. The video mentions Sickle Cell disease and how it affects the blood, and they take the blood stem cells and do the editing outside of their body and the replace the correctly edited cells so they can replicate the blood supply. This is absolutely insane that this is possible. In my opinion, I think CRISPR is a very creative tool but also can be very scary as well. Scientists may not yet fully understand all the implications and it might be risky. The analogy used in the video was how CRISPR kind of works like cutting and pasting. CRISPR works by using RNA molecule that is programmed to match a specific DNA sequence that can cut the DNA at that location. By cutting the DNA at a specific location, they can introduce changes or corrections to the genetic code. I think it is important to proceed with caution and carefully consider the potential risks and benefits before using this technology. CRISPR can be health related such as in areas of disease diagnoses and treatments. CRISPR can be used to correct gene mutations and detect DNA sequences associated with diseases. I think it is crazy how much technology grows, and we can create things like the CRISPR that can change our DNA to help prevent genetic diseases. I think this technology can change the future. I think this video was very informative and interesting to watch. I learned a lot about CRISPR technology. Its amazing the things we can do with technology and how much more we can do in the future as technology keeps growing. I cant even imagine how much this would cost. Health care already is insanely expensive so something like this must cost a fortune. Technology plays a big role in costs in the healthcare system.
