Doug Hall Fixes Tofino Tofino is a remote community on the west coast of Vancouver Island, B.C. Many of the small businesses there depend on the tourism industry, which, to a large degree, is seasonal. Doug Hall is a successful business consultant who has been hired to advise three of Tofino's entrepreneurs on how to be more profitable. The operations include Mike's Market, a fish/ice cream market; a whale-watching/museum company; and Dust Bunnies, a cleaning business. Each enterprise is able to cover its expenses and make a bit of money, but the profits are small, and there is virtually no growth. The owners report working long hours at their respective endeavours and are interested in what a high-profile American consultant might suggest. The initial review shows that the fish/ice cream market owner has several other businesses and lacks focus; the whale-watching entrepreneur has tried to differentiate by offering whale bones for the tourists to admire as part of his museum, and the owner of the cleaning service, although successful, is simply tired of cleaning toilets. An analysis of the businesses might show some strengths based on location, but how about the owners' backgrounds? Can you think how current economic conditions (worldwide) might impact each entrepreneur? Are they financially viable? To help these businesses, Doug Hall suggests strategies such as diversification for the whale- watching business, greater focus and branding for the fish/ice cream market, and the addition of a totally new operation for the owner of the cleaning business. In an area that depends heavily on tourism, it is difficult to make the same amount of money all year round; the stress of having to make enough money in the summer to last the entire year is enormous. Whale-watching does occur year-round, but summer is the busiest time. Dust Bunnies primarily cleans vacation rentals, and Mike's Market, although serving the locals, depends on the tourists as well. Doug Hall makes excellent recommendations to the owners, and the results are interesting. Critical Thinking Questions 1. Analyze each business using the SWOT technique. 2. Look at each of Doug's suggestions; do they fit with your SWOT analysis? 3. Pick one business and do a full analysis using Porter's Five Forces Model. Should the owner close and look for waged employment? 4. Which of the three companies profiled in the video found a strategy to create a year- round income?
