Question: Please pick one job experience you do NOT like and briefly describe the situation. Then, please use Job Characteristics Model to explain what you can do differently to make the job more fun.
Response: Ever since I turned of age to start working, I have had my fair share of jobs in which I did not really enjoy. Jobs that I thought that would have helped me gain more experience in which would benefit my future, ended up being the complete opposite. But if I were to choose just one of the worse jobs I had was in high school when I was working at a restaurant as a hostess.
It wasnt a hard job at all. It was a bigger and very popular restaurants than most, so the requirements were a bit more than regular hostesses. Besides taking reservations and seating guests, I would also do take-out orders, deliveries, catering, help the event manager coordinate events, do the daily board signs, and water the plants every shift. Most of the employs were great but the management was just awful. There were several managers in the restaurant, but the communication between them and the employees was just awful. Besides the lack of communication, the treatment was just unbearable. It was like these managers did not know how to treat their employees. There were several times in which managers wouldnt let me know if the kitchen was out of a certain food, or if they had put in a reservation last minute without any information, etc. They just wouldnt communicate with me or let me know so whenever something would happen, I was completely clueless because I was never informed. There was a time where a manager put in a large group for a reservation without taking any contact information to confirm the timing, and it happen to me on my shift so when I went in, it made it look like it was my fault for not being able to contact them. Whenever something would occur, or there were any mistakes, the way they would talk to you was just so rude. They would talk to their employees like if everything was their fault and somehow made them feel useless.
As for using the Job Characteristics Model to make a job better would be skill variety. Skill variety is the extent to which a job requires a variety of skills to carry out tasks involved. I feel like this would go towards the managers and workers who can actually do their job right and have good customer service especially the way you talk to others involved in the job. Also, task significance is another one. I always felt like if employees or managers cared about their job and treated their employees right, their employees would care more about the job and do their best work which makes them want to be successful at what there are doing. If you treat your employees right, you motivate them to want to do better at their job which benefits the job in the long run because the employees will make your company successful. Jobs require team work, and helping each other out.
