Question: Please pick one job experience you do NOT like and briefly describe the situation. Then, please use Job Characteristics Model to explain what you can do differently to make the job more fun.
Response: In general, a job should be something fun and exciting for people for them to perform at or above expectations. Last summer, I decided to work at a rental company with a hope that it will help me add to my sale/customer service experiences. I work as a customer service representative. Since this was the first time I had a structure job, at the beginning it was fun and exciting for me but as time passes I quickly realized that this could not be a job I stay in for long. First, the job description on their website was far different from the actual job I was performing daily. Now thinking back to it, this should have given me my first hint that this was not as structure as I believed it was. There were many reasons that the job was not as enjoyable as possible, with the main ones being the behavior of the manager and the ways the tasks themselves were split. In terms of behavior, the manager was always acting unprofessional toward all the employees. The first impression people usually get when they start working there is the manager bad behavior. He is too overbearing and want the employees to execute the work he assigns without them having any opinion even if it is good one that will potentially improve the workflow. This affected employees moral a lot to the point that most of us felt that he was treating us like slave since we must do the task giving by him even if the task is a factor to slow the workflow. We must do as he wished. Another thing I did not enjoy was the fact that the work life balance was almost non-existent. There was no flexibility in the schedule, and it was very unpredictable and could not make much of plans. We had to wait until on Sunday nights to know your schedule and possibly make your life work around that. We have tried asking to be put on the same days of the week so that people who were going to school could possibly do this job when school restarted. But the manager will put you on days he felt like putting you on. There was also a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding between the manager and other workers which lead employees to sometimes do what they wanted to do and disregard any instructions. As an example, I remember when I just started one of the assistant managers assigned me work to do and the work consisted to move our truck from one spot to another spot. I did the work as my assistant manager said and a few minute later after the main manager came and started yelling at us. When I tried to explain myself to him, he said clearly that he doesnt want to hear me, and he must just execute as he said. The worst part was that some of these yelling seances will be in front of customers.
I believe that proper training from the manager level down the line would have been beneficial for all. Having the right tone at the top is very important and would help with the moral. The manager should have specific task for each person to do and have specific instructions as to what the task is for. Also, if they give a background of why each task is done will help employees see the big picture and the necessity of doing a certain task. I think getting frequent feedback is very necessary and having a manager who is willing to also listen is very important.
