New CIOs are expected to deal with the complexity, instability, and integrating of new technologies that are going to be implemented in businesses. They are heavily relied on being able to "do more with less" utilizing their experience and research to point out right specification required at the time. The article also notes 4 P's the CIOs need to have to positively impact the business operations. The article also notes that new CIO's importance to a business will be measured by 4 P's: perception, profile, participation, and performance. Perception means how important a CIO (or IT department) is viewed by the company. IT personnel should not be viewed as just tech supports that manage user names and passwords, but key roles that manage systems, applications and database along with security and disaster recovery components. CIO's profile indicates the person's ability to combine both operational and strategical knowledge to estimate how new technology will impact the firm. Participation refers to being initiative and evaluate what is needed or not needed for the business to optimize its performance. Performance requires the CIO to be innovative and cooperate outside of IT department to show other departments how IT is improving their performance. The article stated it is hard to measure performance of IT. In order to appeal to other departments, the CIO should be a good negotiator and implement technology that can tie into the business.
