Case Study A: PROTECTING WORKERS FROM WORKPLACE VIOLENCE Kinark Child and Family Services is an agency providing mental health services and support for children and youth in central Ontario. On May 4, 2014, a relatively new employee was directing a youth back to his room in the detention centre for the night. The youth became aggressive and repeatedly struck the worker. A co-worker close by intervened and was also injured in the assault. As a result, the company was fined for failing to provide information, instruction, and supervision to protect the workers from workplace violence. Employees were dealing with relatively unstable individuals or clients in their workplaces. The organization was fined for failing in its responsibility to develop, establish, and supervise workers in a manner that reduced the likelihood for workplace violence. This is a reminder of the shared responsibility model toward workplace safety. Even if workers are employed at locations in which clients or customers may be aggressive, employers and supervisors must develop practices and procedures to ensure worker safety
