Throughout this course, we will learn more detailed information about the different types of research designs. For this question of the applied activity, you will pick a NEW topic of interest and develop a research objective and question. You will then need to suggest how you would conduct the research. Your task is to:
- Pick a general topic.
- Define your research objective. This must include WHY you are interested in this topic and WHY the research should be done (what benefits would it have).
- Develop a relevant, feasible, and interesting research question related to the topic to explain WHAT you want to learn in relation to the research objective.
- Select a tentative research strategy and explain how you would use that research strategy to get the information you need.
This will serve as a mini-project proposal that you may continue to adjust and work with on future applied activities in the course. Therefore, you should choose your topic and question wisely. Every student in the course should have a UNIQUE topic and research question. You must work INDIVIDUALLY on this applied activity.

Students drink a lot of coffee, and this can help them stay awake. Recent research shows that [c]affeine, in any form, was consumed by 92% of students (Mahoney et al., 2019, p. 668). While we know that many students drink coffee, we are not sure if they are aware how long it takes to actually get their favourite beverage. The goal of the research is to determine what motivates Cambrian College students to stand in line to buy coffee. I going to study the question: why do students stand in line to get coffee instead of going downstairs to get it themselves at the self serve Tim Hortons at the Cambrian College campus? There are many benefits to this research, as the results could not only inform the student body, but help students better understand how much time each coffee option takes, allowing them to budget their time more effectively.
I am interested in this subject because I often have back to back meetings or classes when on campus and want to be on time. When I stand in long lines I wonder if I will be late and if waiting is worth it. I also wonder if standing in line is a social experience, and this may be why people do it, even if it ends up taking longer.
I think the best way to carry out this study is to do a survey of everyone standing in line. I will ask them questions about why they are standing in line and record the answers on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best. This information will help me understand why people stand in line, and if they are doing it for the reasons I think they are.
