As a SARC working a case that CID is investigating, you have an ethical responsibility to maintain professional relationships; promote independence and control on the part of the victim; report to the SARC any conflict of interest that prevents oneself or a colleague from being able to provide services to a victim, work cooperatively with colleagues or allied professionals, or be impartial in the treatment of any victim.

Maintaining professional relationships means being able to separate your personal relationships from your professional duties. When this does not occur there is potential for a conflict of interest. As a SARC or VA you represent the victim. CID represents the government. A personal relationship could compromise the victim's trust in you, particularly if the case is unsubstantiated. Conversely the subject's trial defense may allege that your personal relationship biased the investigators towards the victim.

Reporting to the SARC any conflict of interest that prevents oneself or a colleague from being able to provide services to a victim ties in with the previous point. If there is no preexisting relationship, do not enter one with anyone working the case. If the relationship is preexisting, either you as the SARC, or the CID agent must appeal to their chain of command for a replacement due to conflict of interest.

Reporting to the SARC any conflict of interest that prevents oneself or a colleague from being able to provide services to a victim and work cooperatively with colleagues or allied professionals would prevent you from getting into this situation. Moreover, doing so now would allow for this situation's ethical resolution.
