In my experience working before, during and after the height of the covid pandemic, restricting visitors was absolutely essential to minimizing the spread of covid. In regards to patient rights, if the patient were to be incapacitated and unable to make medical decisions independently, in my experience, the power of attorney would still be able to be present during the patients stay in order to protect the patients rights. In the emergency department, it was an adjustment for patients to have their family members/ visitors turned away, but most patients understood the importance of these restrictions and were understanding of the enforcement of these new rules. In situations wherein the patient is in critical condition, there were always accomodations made so that family could remain at the bedside throughout the duration of the patients stay. The reality is that even before covid there were time restrictions in visitation hours, and while having family present at the bedside is a comfortability measure, it is not a necessity in most cases. In the world of Labor and Delivery, this was a much bigger adjustment and a massive disappointment for many birthing mothers and new fathers. In this case, I can understand the frustration in enforcing these new policies. Regardless, it was essential to minimizing the spread and did not encroach on any patient rights by removing the accomodation of family members at the bedside.
