After reading the article from Standford Medicine about the grandma who has a mutation, in a gene that was passed onto three generations of her family, I was very intrigued. The younger generations had to watch their parents fall ill at such a young age. That can be very traumatizing as a child, I cant imagine how scary it must be for her family members to have to consider that when planning a family. In the article it is stated by one of her grandsons that, Because of that threat, Slabaugh said that he never married and never had children. Not only that but the idea of being given the option of getting a gastrectomy is a lot for someone to take in. This is a story that would need to be researched about. Chapter 2 in our textbook gives a portion to talking about the risk factor approach. Putting myself in the shoes of the children and grandchildren who have a chance of having this gene, I would like to know as much as I can and as soon as possible to be able to find other options, like getting my stomach being surgically removed like they were given. In addition, to that statement, chapter 6 and 7 discuss stress and understanding pain, this relates to this situation because a lot of their questions go unanswered because this isnt a common situation that healthcare providers commonly deal with. I believe I am someone who is full of curiosity. With that being said, if a lot of my family members are passing and being diagnosed, I would put pressure to know if there's anything I could do to help or relieve any pain. Moreover, being able to consider everyones feelings I would want to be more optimistic and comforting; knowing this would be in the back of everyones mind because the chances of us being affected are high.
It is heartbreaking that while worrying about this mutation gene, they also must work, take care of their sick family members, manage their own families, and more. With a lot on their plate, I had found a website to avoid burnout. This helps give different things to consider while being a caretaker. Such as, asking for help, schedule time for self-care, practice mindfulness, and more
