Heckler's is a specialty promotions agency recognized for their "flash promotions" & "person on the street" interviews that tend to go viral on Twitter & other social media. The company is known for putting people on the spot to compare opposing products or sample new products. Their promoters are brash, & witty, catching people off guard & capturing these moments on video. The key to their success is promoting products during high-traffic areas, such as before a sporting event, so they can reach a large audience. Also, another critical aspect of their business is the speed at which they deliver well-edited video clips & distribute them to influencers on social media. Planning these promotional events is a critical part of their success & lately, too many problems have cropped up. Sanjay, who recently became the new Director of Promotions, is concerned about this. He knows every event project must be carefully choreographed to ensure all the pieces are in place.
Of course, it starts with the sponsor - the company that wants its product promoted. Some of the parameters of individual projects include:
Several planning meetings take place with the sponsor's upper management & Sanjay.
Product samples must be obtained, as well as samples of competitive products.
The event location must be scouted to ensure the demographic profile of the location & public attendance fit the promotional strategy.
Promoters must be determined from the current pool of freelancers or new independent contractors hired & screened.
In some cases, promoting a product requires securing local permits for solicitation, & other related organizational approvals, such as a professional sports organization or school approval.
Releases must be obtained from public participants to allow video clips to be distributed.
Other equipment needs must be scheduled, such as a site tent & tables/chairs, videographers & a satellite truck, signage, & promotional materials. In the past, Hecklers has outsourced the recording tasks to an outside videography company called Short Takes Media. They film the events & send the raw footage to Heckler's main offices. The Heckler's team reviews & edits the clips to distribute to social media influencers. The entire process must be turned around within 24 hours to create a viral following effectively. Sanjay realizes that these events have been chaotic and disorganized in the past. The Promotion Coordinator would show up to the location & find product samples & promotional materials were missing, video equipment was still enroute, freelancers weren't adequately trained on how to approach the public for the pitch, & sometimes the event locations weren't correctly screened for the demographic fit, parking & access issues, not to mention safety. Additionally, to ensure great candid video clips, at least 50 people must be approached & recorded.
