This first assignment for the course is, not surprisingly, very basic.
1. Using ssh, connect and log in from your own PC to one of the CS Dept Linux servers.
Let me explain that phrase "from your own PC"
You should be connecting directly from the PC that you are seated at to the CS Linux machines. Whether the PC you are seated at is actually your own or one at work or at another school does not matter.
Do not connect to the CS Dept's virtual PC lab (Windows) and log in to Linux from there.
There will never be a good reason to connect to the CS Virtual PC Lab (vcportal. cs.odu. edu) in this course.
Yes, that means that you may need to install some software (in this case, an SSH client) on your PC.
A major goal of this course is to set you up to be able to work effectively and efficiently in your later CS courses. In that vein, you do not want to be inserting extra network hops into your connections. Connecting to one machine in order to connect to a different one leads to sluggish response times, compromised graphics quality, and less control over what you are doing.
2. Give the following command:
1s -1d ~
Note that the above command does not contain any numeric digits. "1" is a lower-case "L", not a numeric digit "1". Pay attention to those differences otherwise it's going to be a very long semester for you.
