The incident that I decided to speak about this week is when one of the most significant sports TV figures stated how one of baseball's biggest stars having an interpreter was terrible for the game. Stephen A. Smith of ESPN stated, "The fact that you got a foreign player that does not speak English, believe it or not, I think contributes to harming the game to some degree" though the statement was made as a joke, it came off very tasteless. Baseball is no longer just America's pastime. It is a global game that is not only played in multiple countries. It is one of the few sports whose overseas competition may be just as good as the professionals here in America. Many players from Latin American countries speak little to no English, so having someone translate for them is necessary. The player discussed was Los Angles Angels Shohei Ohtani, who last year was a dual-threat. This guy pitched at an elite level. He also hit bombs. Smith's thinking that Ohtani cannot give an interview without an interpreter hurts the game. These remarks came at a terrible time. This was during the height of senseless attacks on Asians here in America. In such a global game, interpreters are just as important, if not more important, than the coaching staff. More than 28% of active players hail from outside the U.S. borders. Many of them prefer to communicate in languages other than English: Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin, and mashups of baseball-speak that exist somewhere in between. In 2016 Major League Baseball mandated that teams have them readily available. This move made by the MLB was made because there was a growing need for it. However, some cultural things may get lost in translation even with that. Baseball can be an all-comprehensive language. You have to catch the ball, throw the ball, and hit the ball. However, the reality is that the men taking the field are dynamically from varying backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities. Their challenge to communicate should not get inside the way of their execution. At the end of the day, what Stephen A Smith said was wrong. Shohei Ohtani is one of the most prominent baseball players in the world. His need for a translator has nothing to do with his skill. Baseball is a global game, and every time the lights come on and that first pitch is thrown out there, it is on full display. What I think is cool is today's generation of kids. Because of all the fantastic technology, kids at the Little League world series used google translate to speak to their foreign opponents. How great is that? I wish those things were available when I was a kid living overseas.
